Open Source Chart Plotter: OpenCPN
For years I’ve shied away from chart plotters on computers. I’ve seen too many issues. For me, programs like Nobeltec were just too cumbersome to learn and become competent with.
Today there are several FREE programs that can be had. OpenCPN and SeaClear are among the offerings. I downloaded both and chose OpenCPN to use on my Acer Aspire One aboard Diligence. I purchased my AA1 about a year ago at Costco for $350. Last week I saw one (Win XP) a Wal-Mart for $250.

I’ve ordered a $36.95 USB antenna for use aboard the boat and in class. I found it at Amazon, here.
The charts, both Raster and Vector are free downloads from NOAA, here.
I went to the NOAA site above and downloaded both sets and moved them to the OpenCPN program folder. The chore was easy and didn’t require much in the way of following instructions (good thing.)
So far I like what I see and will report a on a trip I’m making to the Everett area in about a week.
Stay tuned.
BTW: OpenCPN hints and tips are here.
FYI: The follow up post from 11/2/09 is here.

Cap’n, is that system capable of displaying AIS data with a receiver (or transponder) hooked up?
Having been trained and used paper charts all my life (I am 73) I too had a learning curve. I like the RASTOR for ocean and coastal navigation. However once ‘pilotage’ waters are entered, whether a Compulsory Pilot is aboard or not, I switch to VECTOR finding more clarity in quick position checks. What do y’all think?
It would be interesting to have some comments on that, always open to learning something about maritime affairs.
Good Watch
Bob, Yes it is.
